Can you really do that? Lessons Learned from the Federal Government Peer External Quality Assessment Pilot

Independent external assessment of the internal audit function is part of a strong internal audit quality assurance and improvement program, required by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Standards, and is a critical component of the system of checks and balances built into the management framework for the Government of Canada’s internal audit function.

As part of its internal audit innovation agenda, the Office of the Comptroller General of Canada led a pilot project where federal public sector internal auditors from three departments conducted external practice inspections on each other’s organizations with the support of an IIA coach.

Were their audit committees supportive of this approach?  Was the exercise worth the level of effort involved? The presentation will answer these questions and share other lessons learned from the peer external quality assessment pilot.
